You walk twenty minutes past them before you reach any ice at all, and the gaps between the posts keep getting longer. Nobody on that trail talks much. You've had your own version: the street where your grandmother's house stood, now a showroom. The bench where you and someone used to sit every evening - still there, the person not. You can stand exactly where something enormous used to be and feel the cold still coming off the space it left. That's what you wear. Not the loss - the markers. Proof that someone noticed, put a post in the ground, and wrote the year down. The ice was here. So were you. A stranger reads the dates, does the maths, and goes quiet.
